Organizing Community Controlled Solar in Philadelphia
2-4PM at Making Worlds Books
210S 45th Street
As the world collectively moves towards new forms of carbon neutral infrastructures, communities have the chance to rethink the ways these systems can shift from extractive systems to community owned and controlled infrastructure which could be run by and serve the people. A number of organizers working on different aspects of community solar will be getting together to present on obstacles (legal, technical and otherwise) and organizing opportunities related to the implementation of community-owned solar and solar microgrids in Philly.
Microgrids are relatively small scale solar generators that could take advantage of vacant land, rooftops and other public spaces that could provide power to Philly neighborhoods, generating electricity, jobs and income for community members.
Currently legislation is on the table to open some space for community solar to happen in PA. We see it as a first step forward to build real community controlled solar in Philly! So please join us to get caught up on where things stand and hear from:
- Elowyn Corby from Vote Solar
- Allen Drew from the Hunting Park Community Solar Initiative
- Shakaboona from the Human Rights Coalition and the End Toxic Prisons Campaign
- Julian Burnett from PosiGen and EcoPhilly
